Not including Saudi Arabia, the main source of terrorists, in the travel ban list, is the biggest piece of evidence for the hypocrisy of this US administration. Not that any other US administration would have done any different either - but arbitrarily defined travel bans are not a case we could easily contemplate about, what with the lack of precedent.

Trump's behaviour in the wake of the London attacks has been nothing short of despicable. It would have been a non-issue, had he not occupied the position of the leader of the most powerful and influential, presumably modern, democratic and enlightened society on this planet. If this is the face that the American nation is gong to present to the rest of the world for the next four years, I'm afraid it will have lost almost all its credibility by the time his term is done - to deep, far-reaching long-term consequences.

Predictably, the CIA is shifting the focus on the leakers rather than the content of the leaks. They are now saying the purpose of WikiLeaks is to undermine the intelligence services' capacity to defend the US from its enemies.

What about the intelligence services' undermining of their own citizens' civil freedoms?

‘Black Mirror’ Creator Predicts Trump Will Be President: ‘I Find It F*cking Terrifying’

Charlie Brooker, the showrunner of the acclaimed dystopian sci-fi series, is convinced that Donald Trump will win the presidential election. God help us all.

...And he was right. Even if he didn't take his own prediction seriously at the time. I watched that Black Mirror episode the other day, The Waldo Moment. The similarities are eery. And that one did not end so well.

Trump pick tips climate-change anxiety into full-blown panic

People laughed in 2005 when a little-known energy-industry advocate with a BA in philosophy and an MSc in political science rounded on the UK’s chief scientist, David King, calling him “an alarmist with ridiculous views who knows nothing about climate change”. They’re not laughing now. The man in question, Myron Ebell, has been named by President-Elect Donald Trump to head his transition team at the US Environmental Protection Agency. The fox has been handed the keys of the ecological henhouse.

Trump’s message for most of this week was that women alleging sexual assault — regardless of how many years had passed, whether they filed charges, whether their claims were held up by the courts — deserve to be heard, rather than discredited or attacked. Trump made this clear by holding a news conference with three of Bill Clinton’s accusers, urging the media to tell their stories and speaking about them in his rallies.

Then, four women came forward alleging Trump groped or kissed them without their consent. And Trump’s stance changed. He attacked the women personally, cast doubt on their motives, called them liars and a part of a politically orchestrated attack.

Poland abortion strike: Thousands of women in over 60 cities refuse to work in protest over restrictive laws

Thousands of Polish women dressed in black have boycotted work and taken to the streets in protest against a plan to ban abortions. ... Poland already has one of Europe's most restrictive abortion laws and opinion surveys show very little support for an even stricter law, despite the nation's deep Catholicism and conservative political direction.

Widespread outrage after IS bulldozes ancient Iraq city

Condemnation poured in Friday of the Islamic State group's bulldozing of the ancient city of Nimrud, the jihadists' latest attack on Iraqi cultural treasures that the UN termed a "war crime". After rampaging through Mosul's museum with sledgehammers and torching its library last month, IS "bulldozed" the nearby ruins of Nimrud Thursday, the tourism and antiquities ministry said.

Reports: ISIS bulldozed ancient Hatra city in Mosul

Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) militants bulldozed early Saturday the ancient city of Hatra founded 3rd or 2nd BC by the Seleucide Empire, activists and Kurdish media reported. Spokesman for the 14th branch of the Kurdish Democratic Party (KDP) in Ninveh province Saeed Mumuzini told Rudaw news website that “ISIS militants used bulldozers to destroy Hatra city.” “ISIS stole the ancient gold and silver coins, which were used by the Assyrian kings and were stored in the city,” Mumuzini added.

Vast and empty, Burma’s new capital will not fall to an urban upheaval easily. It has no city centre, no confined public space where even a crowd of several thousand people could make a visual – let alone political – impression.

Apparently, Game of Thrones is getting banned in the Turkish military, because it would somehow make those young lads love their country less (or something). I really do not get it sometimes...

Why Turkey’s military wants to ban ‘Game of Thrones’

"The Turkish Armed Forces has updated its set of regulations for the high school academies that it administers, inserting an article in the chapter for "protection of students." It advises a ban on screening films or shows that depict "sexual exploitation, pornography, exhibitionism, abuse, harassment and all negative behaviors." Hurriyet cites "Game of Thrones" as one of the main culprits."

Obviously, though, Tyrion Lannister remains unimpressed with Erdogan's shenanigans.

This is a sad time for Europe, as it puts a mirror right before its face and forces it to look. And the sight it is seeing is not pretty at all.

The saddest thing is that the media and the public keep addressing the wrong side of the problem. Having listened to the media in the last few days, I could not help noticing how almost everyone is again pointing the finger at smugglers, calling for doubling the efforts to fight them, as if that would somehow tackle the problem in its roots and magically stop the loss of life at sea.

Until people realise that not the smugglers are the reason why people are boarding unseaworthy vessels desperately trying to reach the shores of Europe to do menial work for subsistence pay, these tragedies will continue.
