In this day and age of commercialism in all domains in life, including sport, it is nice to occasionally remember what it was all meant to be about originally. Two cases in point:

With a population of approximately 320,000, Iceland became the smallest European country to reach a major tournament by qualifying for Euro 2016 on Sunday with two games to spare.

And there is a good reason for that success: exemplary management. It is not up to a golden generation or anything of the sort. It is a systematic work in the right direction. So, Team Iceland is here to stay!

So far this has been the best World Cup I have seen in decades... Italy looked helpless against tiny Costa Rica; England is sent packing after round 2; Spain is dethroned in a spectacular fashion by inspired Chile; attacking, technical and imaginative football triumphs everywhere as Latin American teams trounce their famous counterparts - I'M LOVING IT!

Japanese fans cleaned their section of the stadium after the match with Ivory Coast. WOW.

This year's World Cup host Brazil may have hammered South Africa 5-0 in a friendly game the other day in Johannesburg, Neymar scoring a hat-trick... but the highlight of the day was this awesome moment when a very young football fan invaded the pitch, and instead of being pushed away by the match stewards, ended up being tossed in the air by the whole Brazilian team, and taking selfies with some of football's biggest stars of the day. A great moment of football spirit. Well done, Neymar!

Icelandic Runner Breaks Own European Record

Seventeen-year-old Icelandic runner Aníta Hinriksdóttir reaffirmed her position as Iceland’s rising star in athletics after setting a new Icelandic record in the 800 meters, 2:01,81, over the weekend, breaking her previous record of 2:03,27, mbl.is reports. The time was also confirmed as an European record for 19 years and under, a record which she set last year.

Aníta also set the world youth record last year in the Ukraine. She was recently named the runner-up Icelandic Sportspeople of the Year 2013.

She is Iceland’s most successful athlete to date.

So the groups draw for the World Cup in Brazil is a fact now. And we are again hearing the same old songs before the new World Cup: do not go there, people will rob you and rape you and kill you! Just like before the previous World Cup... Somehow, most of these headlines happen to be around the British media... Odd.

I do not remember any of those dark predictions coming to be at the previous World Cup here in South Africa...

HE hopes to one day be playing at the Paralympics but for now 11-year-old Gabriel Muniz is more than happy just to meet his idol Lionel Messi and train with Spanish club Barcelona.

The soccer-mad Brazilian, who was born without feet, will head to Spain for the famous club's summer training camp in September.

For the next World Cup, instead of a vuvuzela, I propose this to become the official instrument:

Only six weeks remain until the start of the FIFA World Cup and we Capetonians are already very excited!

Just look at our local stadium, the brand new CT Stadium, which was raised in the place of the old Greenpoint stadium. Isn't she a beauty???
