The true Olympic spirit
In this day and age of commercialism in all domains in life, including sport, it is nice to occasionally remember what it was all meant to be about originally. Two cases in point:

We made it!
With a population of approximately 320,000, Iceland became the smallest European country to reach a major tournament by qualifying for Euro 2016 on Sunday with two games to spare.

And there is a good reason for that success: exemplary management. It is not up to a golden generation or anything of the sort. It is a systematic work in the right direction. So, Team Iceland is here to stay!

Brilliant World Cup
So far this has been the best World Cup I have seen in decades... Italy looked helpless against tiny Costa Rica; England is sent packing after round 2; Spain is dethroned in a spectacular fashion by inspired Chile; attacking, technical and imaginative football triumphs everywhere as Latin American teams trounce their famous counterparts - I'M LOVING IT!

True football spirit
This year's World Cup host Brazil may have hammered South Africa 5-0 in a friendly game the other day in Johannesburg, Neymar scoring a hat-trick... but the highlight of the day was this awesome moment when a very young football fan invaded the pitch, and instead of being pushed away by the match stewards, ended up being tossed in the air by the whole Brazilian team, and taking selfies with some of football's biggest stars of the day. A great moment of football spirit. Well done, Neymar!

Another World Cup, another hysteria
So the groups draw for the World Cup in Brazil is a fact now. And we are again hearing the same old songs before the new World Cup: do not go there, people will rob you and rape you and kill you! Just like before the previous World Cup... Somehow, most of these headlines happen to be around the British media... Odd.
I do not remember any of those dark predictions coming to be at the previous World Cup here in South Africa...
