Earth Overshoot Day

Saturday has earned a dubious distinction among conservationists as Earth Overshoot Day -- the estimated point when the planet's 6.8 billion people have consumed all of the biological resources that Earth can provide annually. (source)

The world has gone into ecological overdraft. As of August 21, we’ve exceeded our natural ‘budget’ for the year. In other words, we’ve consumed 12 months worth of natural resources in under nine months. (source)

There is absolutely nothing we bipedal plains apes have that can wreck THE PLANET. Now, the Biosphere and for that matter the totality of human cultures and languages? That's dying at alarming rates that nobody much gives a damn about. We've no power to collapse the actual ball of rock, though.

That said, this is no surprise. Given how many liberal democracies at present have unmeetable debt standards due to both the degree they exist and unwillingness to face them, there's hard times a-comin'.
